Reef Walking
At low tide the beach is huge and great for long walks. It is fun to wander along the reef and explore the marine life in the tidal pools. Beach/tennis shoes are needed for reef walks as there are sea urchins to be wary of!
Sand Island
A great little activity nearby is a visit to Sand Island and the star fish conservation area. Just a ten-minute drive up the beach from Mkelekele House, Sand Island is beautiful sand spit where you can walk out on the reef and find an amazing variety of colourful starfish.
Snorkelling & Wasini Island
There is excellent snorkelling in the mouth of the Tiwi River.
A great day trip is to visit Wasini Island where you can snorkel in the pristine waters of Kisite Marine Park and if you are lucky, see dolphins. The trip includes a delicious lunch of fresh sea food and you also visit community projects on Wasini Island.
Scuba Diving
There are a number of operators including Dive the Crab, Southern Scuba and Diani Reef. They each provide introductory diving courses, open water, advanced, rescue and instructors courses. They are members of SSI and PADI. Most dives are held outside the fringing reef, with many sites from Tiwi-Waa in the North to Chale point/Msambweni in the south.
Kite surfing, kayaking and other water sports
These are easy to come by at many of the large hotels on Diani beach.
Deep Sea Fishing
The Indian Ocean offers excellent sport fishing almost all year round and some of the most challenging and exciting deep sea fishing is available just a forty-five minute drive from Mkelekele House, in the Shimoni waters and Pemba channel. Here the chances of catching a striped Marlin are high!
